This is the section devoted to computer and computer-related subjects.
Nowadays, a computer is a machine that can be instructed (through computer programming) to automatically carry out sequences of arithmetic or logical operations. A complete modern computer available commerically will typically come with both hardware and main software (the operating system). Modern computers can follow generalized sets of operations, and these sets are what we normally refer to as computer programs. Through these programs, computer can carry out a wide range of tasks.
For the everyday consumer, the word computer propably denotes their desktop or laptop, but computers are hidden in a wide range of items germane to modern life. The microwave oven has a computer in it, modern cars rely on computers to function properly, and when you swipe your keycard to get into the building there is most likely a computer in there somewhere, making sure that you have the proper authorization. Of course, our smartphones and tablets are also computers, and the Internet is essensially one huge network of computers connected to each other.
Back in the days, the term computer actually denoted a human and not a machine – a human doing computations. Before calculators had been invented, a person, institution or business that needed a lot of time consuming calculations to be made simply had to hire one or more humans to get the job done. It wasn’t until the middle of the 1900s that this use of the term computer became truly obsolete.
The earliest known use of the word computer is from the book “The Yong Mans Gleanings”, published in 1613. Here we can learn about how the writer Richard Braithwaith ” (…) haue read the truest computer of Times, and the best Arithmetician that euer breathed, and he reduceth thy dayes into a short number.”
